Brick wall installation in Ontario CA - a wall that suits your house and your street
Want more privacy or a clear line at the edge of your yard? We build brick walls that look like they belong with your house.

What does it take to build a brick wall in Ontario?
Brick wall installation in Ontario, CA means our crew lays brick and mortar on a footing set in undisturbed ground, so you get a boundary, privacy screen or front-yard wall that holds up for years and suits your house.
Most folks call because they want privacy, a clear edge to the yard or a front wall that dresses up the house, and sometimes an old fence is leaning or a hedge has finally given up. The price comes down to how long and tall the wall is, how much digging the footing takes, which brick and cap you pick and how easy it is to get our crew and materials to the spot. The schedule usually turns on the city's sign off more than the bricklaying, so I get that moving early, and my written estimate lays out what I'd build and why so you see your own number. If a plain block wall fits your budget better, I'll say so, and our concrete block walls page covers that route.

A new brick wall has to suit the house as much as the yard, so I talk through the brick, the cap and where it runs before we settle on a style.

How much does it cost to build a brick wall in Ontario, CA?
Across the US, building a brick wall usually costs about $13,000 to $18,500 for a job with 220 square feet of finished wall area. That's a national going rate, not our price, and yours moves with the length, height, footing, brick and cap we went over above. The written estimate from my visit puts your own figure on it.
Can I use old salvaged brick for a garden wall?
Only if it meets the SW grade, the brick rating for severe weather, which is what brick industry guidance says used brick in a garden wall should meet. Old brick is often unevenly fired and generally falls short, so ask whether yours qualifies before you plan around it. If you've saved a pile you love, show me at the estimate and we'll talk about whether it works or whether a new brick that looks close is the safer pick.
What does the city of Ontario inspect when a wall is built?
On the city's standard plan for concrete block walls, an inspector checks the footing trench with the steel in place, then the wall steel before grouting with a check at mid-height, then the finished wall and a clean site. That plan is written for block, so for a brick wall I ask the city which checks apply before we start.
How do I know a contractor is licensed to build a brick wall in California?
Ask whether their state licence covers masonry, because California's C-29 Masonry Contractor classification is the one written for installing brick and other masonry units in walls and fences. Ask to see that licence and proof of insurance before anyone starts digging in your yard.
Can I build my own brick wall in Ontario?
Yes, Ontario lets a homeowner get a permit and build on their own house and its accessory structures when they live there or will live there. Your wall still goes through the city's design review, the same as one we'd build. If you'd rather hand it off, that's what we're here for.
What is the best way to keep rain from running down a brick wall?
Top it with a coping, the top row of the wall, that sticks out past the brick on both sides with a drip underneath, which is how brick industry guidance says to keep water from running down the face. We talk through the cap at the estimate, since it sets both how the wall looks and how it sheds water.
Building a brick wall in Ontario and the cities around it
Before anyone digs, Ontario's Planning Director has to approve the design and location of every wall, fence and gate, whether or not it needs a building permit, so even a short garden wall gets city review. The city's building permit list calls for permits on concrete block walls over 3 feet high from grade and names fences, but it doesn't name brick walls, so whether your wall needs a building permit isn't settled until the city says so, and I ask early instead of guessing. If any part of the wall crosses the property line, the city needs your neighbor's written permission before it issues a permit, which is one more reason I raise the neighbor question at the first visit. When a job needs city sign off, we take care of the permit and set up the inspections.
Plenty of yards here step up or down, and a brick wall that also holds back soil counts as a retaining wall, which Ontario wants a permit for once it's over 2 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. The city's standard wall plan is also drawn for its set wind speed and for earthquake design level D, so we put reinforcing steel in where a wall needs it. We see the same mix of sloped lots and street-facing walls on jobs in Upland and Rancho Cucamonga.
