Stone masonry in Ontario CA - repairs that hold and walls that can dry out
Crumbling joints or loose stones in your wall? We fix what's failing, leave sound stone alone and use mortar that lets the wall dry out.

Does my stone wall need repointing or repair?
Stone masonry in Ontario, CA is the work of keeping stone walls, steps and facings sound: repointing worn joints with fresh mortar, resetting loose stones and setting manufactured stone veneer. Done right, it keeps water from working in behind the stone, so a wall that needs touching up doesn't turn into one that needs rebuilding.
You usually notice it in the joints first, with mortar that turns to sand when you rub it, gaps you can slide a key into, or a stone that rocks when you lean on the wall. Most of the time only part of the wall needs work, and I'd rather point right at those joints than redo the whole thing, because tearing out sound mortar just costs you money. The price mostly turns on how much of the wall needs attention, how stubborn the old mortar is to get out and whether the wall behind any veneer needs fixing first. The schedule turns on the weather and on whether the city has to sign off. The written estimate spells out what we'd fix and what can stay, so you see your own number before anything starts.

How much does stone masonry cost in Ontario, CA?
There's no one price, because resetting a few loose stones and repointing a whole tall wall are very different jobs. Your cost comes down to how many joints need work, how hard the old mortar is to cut out by hand, how tall and easy to reach the wall is, and whether a backing wall needs repair before veneer goes on. You'll see your own number on the written estimate after I've looked at the wall.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Ontario?
Yes, the city requires a permit for a retaining wall taller than 2 feet, measured from the bottom of its footing. When a job needs city sign off, we take care of the permit and set up the inspections, so you're not chasing paperwork.
Can a handyman do a small stone job in Ontario, CA?
Only if the whole job is $1,000 or less, needs no permit and doesn't bring on hired help, because state law calls for a licensed contractor otherwise. So a stone wall that needs a permit, or a job done with a hired crew, needs a licensed contractor even when it comes in under $1,000.
Can stone veneer go over any wall?
No. One masonry trade group advises putting manufactured stone veneer only over a sound backing wall, not over a failing one or over EIFS, a foam-backed insulated finish that can pass for stucco. If your wall needs repairs, those come first, and the estimate will show them.
What causes white powder on a stone wall after repointing?
That's usually efflorescence, a white bloom of salts that can show up in the first few months after new mortar goes in. National guidance on repointing older buildings says it appears only occasionally and usually goes away through normal weathering, so most of the time the weather takes care of it.
What is the best way to plan stone veneer work in hot weather?
Plan it for cooler days or make sure the work gets covered, because one trade guide calls for shielding veneer from fast drying when it's above 100°F, or above 90°F with wind over 8 mph. That protection runs before, during and for 72 hours after the stone goes on. In an Ontario summer that can push veneer toward the cooler part of the year, so we'll work out timing with you.
Stone masonry rules and walls around Ontario
Before we build or rebuild a stone wall here, I check on the permit, because the city's list names block walls, fences and taller retaining walls but doesn't mention stone walls, so whether yours needs one isn't settled until we ask the city. If a wall crosses a property line, the city's standard wall plan calls for your neighbor's written permission before the permit is issued, so it pays to have that talk early, and on walls near a line we check with the city up front so there are no surprises. The city's standard wall details are also designed with earthquakes and 110 mph wind in mind, so it's fair to ask any mason how your stone wall's design handles both, and I'll walk you through ours.
Around here we see a lot of stone veneer on house fronts and chimneys, low stone garden walls and stone pillars at the ends of block fences, and plenty of it only needs its joints done rather than a rebuild. We're based in Ontario and do the same work across the cities around it, including jobs in Upland and Pomona, and summer heat is why we plan veneer jobs around the weather there too.
